In Islam, a jilbab refers to a loose-fitting, modest garment worn by some Muslim women to cover their bodies. It is often a long outer garment that covers the head and extends to the wrists and ankles. The purpose is to adhere to Islamic principles of modesty and decency. It's important to note that practices and interpretations of modest dress can vary among different cultures and individuals within the Muslim community.
Muslim women wear the jilbab as a reflection of their commitment to modesty. The Quran emphasizes the concept of modesty and encourages both men and women to dress modestly. The jilbab is seen as a way for women to fulfill this requirement by covering their bodies in loose-fitting garments, maintaining modesty in public spaces, and promoting a sense of dignity and respect. It's a personal and religious choice.
Jilbab is a special term cause it’s used directly in the Quran ( 33:59).
O Prophet! Ask your wives, daughters, and believing women to draw their cloaks over their bodies. In this way it is more likely that they will be recognized ˹as virtuous˺ and not be harassed. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.1
Although the Quran does not specify the colour, texture or shape of a jilbab many Muslim women around the world have sewn basic styles and viewed as authentic religious dresses.
